The Anatomy of the Perfect Blind

The Woodnotes collection includes blinds that protect from the sun and excessive brightness while allowing daylight to filter indoors in a naturally beautiful way.

Woodnotes' unique blind fabric collection, woven from paper yarn and organic cotton, reflects a dedication to nature-inspired modern design and material thinking, as well as a tradition of craftsmanship.

At the heart of the Woodnotes collection is an appreciation for the beauty of the changing seasons. The tones and forms of northern nature – and their harmony – are reflected in all of our products, including our blinds. In Finland, the changes in natural light are particularly dramatic, and it is this life and rhythm of natural light that has inspired the design of our blind fabrics.

In Finland, daylight hours are currently lengthening as we approach the midnight sun of midsummer. Natural light is abundant from early morning until late at night, and even into the next sunrise. Daylight is essential to our well-being, but if you'd prefer to limit how much it floods your indoor space, our collection is sure to include the perfect curtain for your needs. Our curtains protect interiors – including furniture, people, and pets – from the intense UV rays and heat of spring and summer, as well as from glare.

Light filters through the curtains like it does in a forest

The unique blind fabric collection by Woodnotes, woven from paper yarn and cotton, brings a calm atmosphere and beauty to a variety of spaces. Our Open Sky, Vista, and Cloud fabrics filter light while still allowing partial visibility. The Morning fabric is the right choice if you need more coverage and protection from the morning sun.

The presence of nature and the forest can also be felt in the materials: the paper yarn is made from northern conifer trees.

The blind fabric designs are the work of our founder, textile artist Ritva Puotila. The soft, natural tones of the paper yarn blinds are rhythmically arranged in various warp and weft stripe patterns, either playfully varied or gently harmonious. The cotton warp yarn interwoven with the paper yarn creates beautiful structures that differ from design to design.

The colors and rhythmic patterns of the designs evoke northern landscapes in different seasons. They feature the signature colors of the Woodnotes collection – white, natural brown, sand, graphite grey, and black – alongside a luminous silver-blue. Most importantly, the light filters through in the most beautiful way – like sunlight through drifting clouds or a forest canopy.

The presence of nature and the forest can also be felt in the blind materials: the paper yarn is made from northern conifer trees. The curtains create a naturally calming atmosphere and help soften spaces, improving acoustics in combination with other home textiles.

The Woodnotes curtain collection is versatile

Among the various Woodnotes blind mechanisms, you’ll find an option for every window and every need. Effortlessly adjustable blinds can be made from any Woodnotes blind fabric, as can structured panel blinds.

During the long, dim evenings and dark nights of autumn and winter, the function of blinds reverses compared to spring and summer: they block views into illuminated interiors and protect home privacy. When mounted on a track, panel blinds can be moved freely – you can place them side by side or overlapping, and even use only part of them seasonally. By layering blinds, you can create a composition tailored to your needs: a different atmosphere, layered textures, or varying levels of opacity and openness.

Woodnotes curtains – Finnish design at its finest

Woodnotes was originally founded around Ritva Puotila’s art textiles. This heritage is still strongly present in our collection and lives on especially in our ruggedly organic, atelier-knitted, exclusive knits, which can be used as softly draping curtains or room dividers. Light and views filter enchantingly through these knit curtains.

Our curtains are not just curtains – they are a piece of Finnish design history. Atelier-knitted Veil curtain made of paper yarn. Design Ritva Puotila.

The design language and color harmony of all our blinds and blind panels are uncompromising, and every detail is carefully considered. Our blinds are not just blinds – they are a piece of Finnish design history.
